Contractor Caddick Construction has been appointed to deliver the next phase of the Port Loop residential scheme in Birmingham.

The £14 million brief will see it build phase 2b, comprising 58 apartments on canalside land near Edgbaston Reservoir which is due to be ready in early 2025.

This is the first project for the Yorkshire company following the appointment of Ray O'Sullivan as Midlands regional director in the summer and the launch of a new office in Birmingham city centre.

Port Loop is a long-running residential scheme on vacant land in a loop formed by the Birmingham Canal Old Line off Icknield Port Road.

So far, 105 new homes have been completed and occupied alongside a one-acre park, towpath improvements and partnerships with local operators to deliver community events.

Port Loop is being led by a joint venture of developers Urban Splash and Places for People and could eventually comprise 1,150 new houses and apartments.

Caddick Construction's group managing director Paul Dodsworth said: "Our appointment to the next phase of Port Loop is another stride forward in our plans to grow in the Midlands."

Mr O'Sullivan added: "Caddick Construction is a new presence in the Midlands but, between myself and the Midlands team, we have extensive knowledge of the regional market.

"Underpinning this exciting project will be our regional supply chain partners, with which we are already working to ensure an efficient mobilisation on site."

Port Loop project director Adam Willetts said: "We are delighted to be moving forward with Caddick as our contracting partner to bring this next phase of Port Loop to life.

"Their expertise will help us deliver more much-needed, design-led homes for Birmingham and give more people a chance to live in this growing new canalside neighbourhood."

The JV team is already working on future phases of the project, with a further 500 new homes currently going through the planning process including 330 apartments, a new public park, residential green spaces and a new canal towpath.

This next phase of Port Loop has been boosted by a £13 million investment into the site by the West Midlands Combined Authority and was designed by architecture practice shedkm.

West Midlands Mayor Andy Street said: "Port Loop is an initiative that is about more than just building houses. It marks a substantial and collective commitment to increasing the provision of affordable homes in our region, regenerating derelict brownfield sites and transforming them into vibrant communities.

"Our focus remains on ensuring that these homes meet the needs of local residents and help us stay on track to continue meeting our housing targets to build at least 215,000 homes by 2031."
