Union leaders are calling for a joint task force to be set up to secure the future of the country’s biggest rail assembly plant and protect hundreds of jobs. Unite said it was a sensible way to come up with a solution to protect the roles of around 550 workers at the Alstom train manufacturing site in Derby, along with 780 contractors who are also at risk.

The union said a further 900 jobs are under threat in the supply chain, blaming the proposed redundancies on delays in the HS2 high-speed railway line.

Unite said a task force involving the Government, Alstom, the local council and the union should work together to find a way of avoiding the cuts or at worst mitigating the numbers involved.

It said a combination of contracts being brought forward to the tender stage to allow Alstom to bid, combined with the company investing in the site and transferring in some of its overseas work, would futureproof the plant.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “There is absolutely no justification for the proposed job losses.

“It is madness that there is a huge amount of work that Alstom could and should be bidding for but the Government has not got around to tendering for it.

“The Government and Alstom should both be bending over backwards to keep hold of these highly skilled workers and this strategically vital and unique site.

“Unite will leave no stone unturned in its campaign to secure these jobs.”
