New plans have been lodged to build more than 300 student bedrooms in Birmingham city centre.

Edgbaston-based developer Lavender Group is seeking consent for the eight-storey project on land in the city's Gun Quarter.

The application site encompasses both 70-73 Cecil Street, which is currently used as a 79-space car park, and a neighbouring plot fronting the parallel Cliveland Street which is occupied by a vacant commercial building, set to be demolished.

If given the green light by city planning chiefs, the development would comprise 338 bedrooms across both studios and shared flats of between two and eight bedrooms and also a retail unit.

There would be no parking for cars but there would be space for 17 motorbikes and 116 bicycles.

The accommodation would most likely appeal to students attending University College Birmingham in the nearby Jewellery Quarter and the neighbouring Aston and Birmingham City university campuses, all of which are walking distance from the site.

County Durham-based ADG Architects has designed the scheme on behalf of Lavender Property Group.
