A former working' men's club in South is being redeveloped for a social housing scheme. Housing association Pobl Group, in collaboration with developer Castell Group and Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council, said the £7.5m project at the former Neath Working Men's Club site will see 36 new homes built.
All will be rented for social housing. Demolition work is under way after the scheme secured planning consent in June. Construction work is scheduled to commence in the new year and take just over two year to complete. The project, which is being 70% financed from a Welsh Government social housing grant, aims to address demand for affordable housing in the area, while also contributing to the ongoing regeneration of Neath’s town centre. The development is located on Wind Street, close to the council’s new multi-million-pound leisure centre and library.
Dating back to the 1960s, the club, was known locally as the ‘Workies.’ Rosy Steel, project manager for Pobl Group said: "In proud collaboration with Castell Group, the Welsh Government, and Neath Council, our new social rented apartments in Neath town centre embody our shared vision for vibrant and sustainable communities through accessible, quality housing. This project represents our commitment to delivering practical solutions, and revitalising the former Neath Working Men’s Club is not just about building houses, our focus is the ongoing regeneration of Neath town centre.”
The project will consist of 32 one-bedroom apartments and four two-bedroom apartments.
Dorian Payne, Castell Group managing director, said: “We are looking forward to working with Pobl on this new social housing project in Neath. The former workingman’s club will be transformed by our team into high-quality, affordable, and low-carbon housing for the area. Through our partnerships with clients like Pobl, we can deliver much-needed social housing in South Wales.”
The scheme’s homes have been designed to achieve an EPC (energy performance certificate) A rating, incorporating sustainable building practices and advanced technologies to meet Welsh Government standards.
